To fully immerse yourself in the experience, it’s important to have the essential tools and equipment needed for LARPing. Here are some items that will help you be prepared and fully enjoy your adventure:

  1. Costume: A well-designed and appropriate costume is essential for LARPing. Your costume helps you fully embody your character and enhances the immersive experience. Depending on the genre of the game, your costume can range from medieval armor to futuristic attire. Make sure to research the dress code for your chosen game and invest time in creating or finding the perfect costume.
  2. Weapons and Props: LARPing often involves combat and interaction with the environment, so having the right weapons and props is crucial. Foam or latex weapons are commonly used in LARP games for safety reasons. You can find a wide variety of LARP weapons and props online or at specialty stores. Remember to choose weapons that align with your character’s role and the rules of the game.
  3. Safety Gear: While LARPing is a relatively safe activity, it’s always important to prioritize safety. Depending on the game, you may need protective gear such as knee and elbow pads, helmets, or gloves. It’s essential to follow the safety guidelines provided by the game organizers and invest in the appropriate safety gear to ensure a fun and injury-free experience.

Items like a character journal, a pouch for carrying in-game currency, and small props that relate to your character’s backstory can add depth to your role-playing. Additionally, having a water bottle, snacks, and a small first aid kit can be beneficial during longer game sessions.
Remember, LARPing is a highly customizable and creative activity, so your equipment and tools should reflect your character and the game’s theme. Overcoming Initial Challenges: Helpful Hints for Larp Beginners

LARPing may seem intimidating at first, especially for beginners. But fear not! With the right mindset and a few helpful hints, you can overcome the initial challenges and fully embrace the world of LARPing. Here are some tips to help you navigate your way through your first LARP experience:

  1. Embrace the Unknown: LARPing is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown. Don’t be afraid to let go of your inhibitions and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Remember, everyone else is there to have fun too, so don’t worry about looking silly or making mistakes. Embrace the adventure and let your imagination run wild.
  2. Start Small: As a beginner, it’s best to start with smaller LARP events or games before diving into larger ones. This will give you the chance to get familiar with the rules, mechanics, and role-playing aspects without feeling overwhelmed. Starting small will also allow you to build your confidence and gradually explore more complex games as you gain experience.
  3. Be Open to Learning: LARPing is a continuous learning experience, even for seasoned players. Be open to learning from others, whether it’s experienced players or game organizers. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, seek guidance, and learn from their expertise. Remember, the LARPing community is usually very welcoming and eager to help newcomers.
  4. Embody Your Character: One of the most important aspects of LARPing is fully embodying your character. Take the time to develop your character’s backstory, motivations, and personality traits. The more you understand your character, the easier it will be to engage in role-playing and make decisions in the game. Allow yourself to fully immerse in the world of your character and let their story unfold.
  5. Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks: LARPing can be physically and mentally demanding, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take breaks when needed. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard. LARPing is meant to be enjoyable, so make sure to prioritize your well-being throughout the experience.
Remember, every LARPer was once a beginner. Embrace the challenges, learn from your experiences, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. With time, practice, and a bit of adventure, you’ll soon become a seasoned LARPer, ready to take on epic quests and create unforgettable memories.

  1. It’s not unusual to see posts like this that really focus on live combat LARPs. However, there are quite a number of theater-style LARP communities, where there isn’t live combat, as combat, if any, is abstracted into a non-contact mechanic. Many refer to this as “parlor LARPing,” but theater-style is much wider than that. Your article really doesn’t apply well to that important segment of LARP, best illustrated by the annual Intercon all-LARP convention. Our upcoming annual convention, Intercon V (https://v.interconlarp.org/), at the end of February 2024, will be our 25th in New England, so there’s a very long history of this style of LARPing. In fact, the origins of the entire series of Intercon conventions, across several geographic regions, stretches all the way back to 1986. Intercon is not just theater-style; we have a large contingent of people who also play live combat games, or hybrids of the two — which is why there are several live combat games on our schedule.

Theater-style LARPing is known for its diversity in styles, genres, and experimentation. I’ve played in more than 500 different LARP events, including a couple live combat games and several international events. I’ve written 28 different single-shot LARPs, most of which have run many times, including a couple that have run on several continents. (http://www.vortexofchaos.net/larpsWritten.html). While the majority are science fiction games, there are also murder mysteries, comedies, an all-cat game, and even a very intimate 2 player medieval fantasy.

So, while I applaud and appreciate what you’ve written, it doesn’t do justice for a large part of the LARPing community.
